It’s the year of the fire monkey in the Chinese calendar (starting Feb. 8), and Valkarie Fine Art Gallery in Lakewood, CO is commemorating it in their own special way with a big invitational group show called “Monkey Business.” Artists were given 8″ x 8″ panels to work with and allowed free interpretation of the theme. Needless to say, most involve images of monkeys doing what monkeys do (and do not do) in beautiful ways (Kayla Edgar, Sharon Eisley, and MJ Dowling to start), but there are some interesting outliers (see: Frank Martinez’s Donald Trump piece, or Jared D.P. Anderson’s “Monkey’s Thumb”). The range of styles from such a broad group of artists makes for a colorful and charming exhibition. Show opens Friday, Jan. 29 and runs through Feb. 21.
